‘Sabra’, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka (SAB)held a formidable dominance at the Inter-University Athletics Championship 2012. In the overall point calculation, SAB athletes bagged 144 points, while University of Colombo (COL) emerged second with 113 points. University of Peradeniya (PER) were the overall third with 105 points.

In the Women’s category, SAB topped the table with 107 points. It was a mammoth lead over the rest of the contenders, while PER being the closest behind with 79 points. COL emerged third in the Women’s table bagging 48 points.

Much awaited two day Track and Field extravaganza marked its end on Sunday, 29th July 2012 at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium in Diyagama. Overall standings of the meet were based on points for 10 track events and 7 field events for men, and 10 track events and 6 field events for women.

SAB and PER continued their merry way since last year’s (2011) championship, where they were neck and neck against each other for the top three places. Both teams managed to raise the bar to become this year’s (2012) overall champions and runners-up respectively. But to everybody’s surprise, 2011 champions, SJP failed to register their name at the overall top ranks. SJP women’s performance was below the expectations which caused SJP to slump five places to be the sixth in 2012 over all points tally. JAF was not far behind the top three. They managed to score 84.5 points to be the fourth in the table, while University of Ruhuna (RUH), University of Moratuwa (MOR) and University of Kelaniya (KEL) emerged fifth, seventh and eighth respectively.

Following is a summary of Day 1 and 2 of the meet according to the Official Results issued by the Sri Lanka University Sports Association (SLUSA) Organizing Committee.

DAY 1 – Saturday

The highlight of the Day 1 was the performance of ISP Anandagoda of PER who registered a ‘New Meet Record’ for 200M Women’s Running event. She completed the event in 26.4 seconds while the previous record was 26.5 seconds.

By the Day 1 closure, SJP had an upper hand in the Men’s Track events, while RUH, JAF, COL and PER were closely in the hunt. SAB were gaining pace from the Men’s Field events, while Eastern University of Sri Lanka (EST), Wayamba University of Sri Lanka (WAY), KEL and MOR sneak-peaked the points table.

Day 1 Women’s Track events were dominated by PER, while COL, RUH and SAB were closely behind. SAB maintained a tight grip in the Field events, while having COL at their tail. MOR women also managed to register a few medals in Day 1 table.

DAY 2 – Sunday

It was a vibrant environment at Diyagama Stadium in Day 2. First day’s highlight, ISP Anandagoda of PER became the talk-of-the-day yet again as she equalized the Women’s 100M Running Meet Record. 12.80 seconds run made her the fastest woman on the track for 2012 in the university arena. ADM Silva of RUH became the fastest man in the meet as he completed the 100M Men’s run in 11.30 seconds.

As the event came to its closure, SJP Men’s team held on to a firm grip on the Men’s Track events. As expected, JAF and COL were among the Men’s Track medalists. JAF outperformed the rest in the Men’s Field events. SAB was also in the hunt. MOR managed to announce their presence in the Track events, but their first Gold of the event came just a little too late.

PER and SAB women were on the top Track medalists in Day 2. KEL, COL and JAF also managed to be on the Women’s Track medal list. Just as it was in Day 1, SAB dominated the Women’s Field events.

The road race event for the inter-university games 2012 kicked off with an early start on Saturday, 14th July from Torrington place, Colombo. The event saw the participation of athletes from eleven universities running two laps along areas surrounding the University of Colombo, in a bid to clinch the fiercely competitive championship.

As predicted by many, runners from the Universities of Jayawardenapura(USJP) and Universities of Rajarata(RAJ) took to the lead from the beginning of the race. Among them Gayan Sanjeewa (SJP) and M.P.D.A.S.P Somathilaka, both of whom have represented Sri Lanka in the world university games and were thought to be the favourites of the race, broke off from the crowd during the early stages of the run.

As the final few meters approached it was clear that Gayan Sanjeewa would bring victory for USJP and he was followed closely behind by Somathilake from RAJ. W.M.R.A Bandara secured a comfortable third place in the race. Although none of the Univer
sity of Moratuwa (UOM) athletes could reach the top ten places, as a result of an outstanding display of team effort they managed to seize the overall second-runner up spot which according to Mr. Oliver of the physical education division of University of Moratuwa is a first time occurrence in history.

It must be mentioned that students from the University of the Visual and Performing Arts and the traffic police officers contributed immensely towards organizing the event.

The University of Sri Jayawardenapura(SJP) claimed the track and field throne of the inter-university games 2011 after coming out on top of the overall points tally racking up 114 points. Sabaragamuwa University was a well-deserved runner-up falling only a half a point shy of the overall leader with an impressive 113.5.Amassing 108 points apiece, the Universities of Peradeniya and Jaffna were tied for third overall.

All events were held in the MahindaRajapaksa International Stadium, Diyagama on the weekend of the 16th and 17th of July 2011. The overall standings of the track and field championship are based on points for 10 track events and 7 field events for men, and 10 track events and 6 field events for women.

The highlight of the games were the new inter-university games records set, and in the men’s category 2 new inter-university records were set in the track events 800m and 5000m. Both records were courtesy of GayanSanjeewa of SJP who was able to record unprecedented times of 1:59.4 and 15:45.9 in the two events respectively. The SJP women’s 4x400 team clocked an astonishing time of 4.20.7 earning them both a comprehensive 13 second victory over the runner-up and the new record in the event at the inter-university games.

University of Colombo (100 points) and University of Moratuwa(59 points) round out the top six of the track and field championship. With the University Games 2011 at the brink of completion with only a week left, the overall standings are all the more interesting and too tight to call as the split between the second and fourth places is a mere 4 points.
