Basketball Final Goes Under the Microscope

The recently concluded Inter University Games’ Men’s final’s results are under the microscope after the Physical Education Department of the University of Kelaniya lodged an appeal with the Sri Lanka University Sports Association (SLUSA). The nail biting final was decided in favour of the University of Colombo by a solitary point (51-50) though the results have been withheld due to the on-going investigation.

The controversy arose in an incident at the very end of the match. A foul had taken place in close proximity to the point where the final whistle was blown. Disagreement had arisen between the two camps regarding the timing of the foul, whether it was before or after the final whistle and the officials after a brief discussion had ruled that the foul took place after the final whistle was blown. This decision meant that University of Colombo triumphed by the slimmest of margins.

Nuran Madhubhasha, the captain of the University of Kelaniya team felt heart done by the on field decision. He said that “losing is not our concern, as sportsmen we are used to both winning and losing, in fact we lost two finals very recently to University of Moratuwa and accepted our defeat graciously, that’s part of the game.” Nuran went on to say “but it hurts when you feel the officials made a wrong decision. Contrary to popular belief we obviously don’t want to blame the University of Colombo team, they are not at fault in this incident.” When asked about what his thoughts were regarding the outcome he was positive that the SLUSA will come out with a fair decision after considering all the factors.

Meanwhile the vice-captain of the University of Colombo Basketball team, Sameera Dissanayake, remarked “the sound of the final whistle was drowned by the noise of the crowd according to the table, and we respect their decision, I don’t think the referees would have any reason to make things up.” The vice-captain also replied “we are confident that the outcome will be positive, if the Federation and SLUSA decide to revoke the original result and go for a rematch that will be a bad precedent for future matches at Inter University competitions” when asked if he had any doubts about the outcome of the inquiry. However in the scenario that the final decision calls for a rematch, the University of Colombo side may go for an appeal of their own. Sameera was quick to remark “we beat 5 top teams on our way to winning the finals, we are confident of our abilities and if SLUSA and the Basketball Federation call for a rematch we are ready to face University of Kelaniya once again.”

Mr. Rathnamudali of the SLUSA remarked that they had received an appeal from the University of Kelaniya and has duly forwarded it to the Sri Lanka Basketball Federation for a further investigation. Sri Lanka Basketball Federation is now in the process of looking over all the evidence and will divulge their findings with SLUSA in due course.

University of Colombo (UOC) managed to gain the overall lead of the inter university games after winning the Men’s Inter university Basketball championship and becoming the 1st runners-up in the women’s category.

In the men’s category UOC beat University of Kelaniya (UOK) by just one point but it was enough to secure victory over UOK who also played exceptionally throughout the tournament to reach the finals. The finals went right down to the wire as neither team managed to run away with the game as the score remained close from start to end. After the first quarter UOC managed to gain the lead 19-11 but UOK managed to bring down the gap to just two points at the end of the first half to be trailing by 23 points to 25. Then onwards the score remained very close but in the end UOC managed hang on to a one point lead to win the championship 51 – 50.

The UOC side made it to the finals beating another team which had performed well in the university basketball arena Eastern university of Sri Lanka (EST). The EST team managed to beat UOM the defending champions to qualify for the semifinals but couldn’t get the better of UOC as they were beaten in the semis, while UOK beat University of Peradeniya (UOP) to reach the finals.

In the consolation final the 2010 SLUG champions Eastern University managed to beat UOP quite comfortably by 79 points to 67.

The defending champions and the favorites to win the Championship University of Moratuwa (UOM) were beaten in the first round by UOK. The UOM side who had won the MORA Basketball tournament a week ago beating the same opponents in the finals couldn’t manage to win when it mattered the most in the all-important Inter University Championships.

In the women’s category it was a repeat final from the last year as UOP and UOC met in the finals after beating UOK and UOM respectively in the semis. The defending champions UOP managed to retain the championship with an eight point victory over their rivals as the game ended with the score on 59 – 51.

The consolation final was won by the Kelaniya girls as they beat UOM by 29-46

Pandemonium was created in the penultimate clash for the title of the ‘Mora Basketball Tournament 2012’. It was a gritty affair in the finals but at the end the defending champions, University of Moratuwa(UOM) captained by Nuwan Prabath came on top 84-63 over worthy finals opponent University of Kelaniya (KEL).

The Mora Basketball Tournament was organized by the basketball team in collaboration with the Division of Physical Education of the University of Moratuwa and was worked off on the 14th and 15th of July 2012 at the New Gymnasium of the University of Moratuwa. It was organized for the fifth consecutive year. The tournament was a platform for some of the best teams in the university arena and other higher educational institutes to come together and compete with each other and put on a show to all enthusiastic sports lovers of the university community.

The stakes were high in the title match, with UOM already having beaten KEL in the championship game of the SLIIT Invitational Basketball Tournament as early as last week. With pride on the line and both teams going hard at each other, the battle early on in the final was intense. The score line read 35-32 in favor of the home team at the half but the bigger blow for the visitors was one greater than the 3 point deficit. Terrance of KEL, arguably their best player fouled out of the game with 5 personal fouls committed just before the long whistle at the half. With equally strong matchups, both teams needed to fire on all guns and with one of the prolific scorers on the team out of the game, KEL was facing an uphill battle and playing catch up with UOM who ran away with an 84-63 win. Captain Nuwan Prabath scored 35 points and Prashan Liyanage contributed with 26 points for the champions. Nuran Madubashana, captain of KEL top scored for the runners-up with 18 points.

Earlier in the semifinal UOM got the better of SLIIT 68-50, while KEL defeated Old Mora 80-65. In the consolation final where the losing semifinalists clashed, SLIIT upended Old Mora 67-63 in a hard fought encounter.

The women’s championship was evidently dominated by the home team University of Moratuwa who tallied an impressive 44 points as opposed to the 26 made by University of Kelaniya in the finals. Buddhika Kulasuriya top scored for the champions with 25 points.

The closing ceremony was held Sunday night and was graced with the presence of Guest of Honour Prof. J.M.S.J. Bandara, Senior lecturer of the Department of Civil Engineering and former captain of the University of Moratuwa men’s basketball team.

With the end of the tournament all focus will now be directed at the highly competitive Inter-University Games scheduled to commence on the 20th of July 2012. With back to back stellar performances, the defending champions University of Moratuwa, who have dismantled all opponents in competitive tournaments in 2012, will have their sights set on one final gallop in their quest for sheer dominance.
