altThe University of Moratuwa (UOM) stickers registered their third victory of the Colombo Hockey Association (CHA) ‘B’ division league for the ‘Pioneer Shield’ with a hard fought victory over ‘Old DS Hockey Club’ worked off at Malay sports club grounds yesterday.

The old Dons stunned everyone to score and take the lead in the first half but the Mora players came back strong in the second half to score twice in quick succession through forwards Senith Gajanayake and Chamara Samarakoon to take all three points and stay in the hunt for the championship.

Earlier in the tournament UOM beat University of Colombo 4 – 1, and Malay sports club 3 – 1 but had to be satisfied with a draw against the defending champions Wesley sports club which ended with the score on 2 – 2. The match against Wesley was a stunning game as both sides played good hockey and displayed the class and standard of the prestigious tournament.

Wesley has been the dominant side in the B division in recent times and beat UOM twice last year both in the CHA league and the knockout tournaments. After the first half it seemed that the trend would continue as they were leading by two goals to nil. But Mora came back brilliantly to score twice and control most parts of the second half. However in the final moments of the game Wesley had a chance to score the winning goal as they were awarded a penalty stroke but spoiled the chance when the striker found the goalkeepers pads.

“We are quite happy with the way the results have gone so far in the league. although we drew one game we have played good hockey in all the matches and 10 points in 4 games is very impressive. Also we’ve been impressed with the youngsters in our team who have played exceptionally well in a big tournament like this” said the UOM captain Dinesh Amarakoon.

“Although we are taking this tournament seriously our main aim is the Inter university games which will be played in a month from now. The Pioneer shield has given us valuable match practice and good preparation before the tournament” he added.

The Inter University Hockey tournament will be played at the university of Rajarata grounds this year on the 10th,11th and 12th of August.
