Heat of world football died down in early July with a glamorous victory to Spain over Italy in the Euro Cup final, but not for the football fanatics of local state universities. Due to its famous nature, the sport has attracted abundant spectators throughout the tournament providing a couple of exciting twists to the staring eyes.

After a long silence Pera has made their boot mark on the Inter University Football arena claiming the Inter University Football Championship this year over J’pura. J’pura showed a stiff resistance over the match but was not stiff enough to hold Pera victory. The final worked out on the last Monday evening ended 1-0 in favor of Pera.

The consolation final played between University of Jaffna and University of Colombo where JAF made a convincing 2-0 victory over COL.

First round matches of the tournament were held in league form dividing all 14 teams among 4 groups (A, B, C, D). JAF & COL from group A, USJP & UoP from group B, UoM & WAY from group C and UoK and UYA from group D advanced in to the quarterfinals from the first round matches on Saturday. Out of those eight JAF, Pera, USJP and COL only managed to secure their places in the semifinals. In the semifinals Pera beat JAF with a 1-0 lead while USJP beat COL with a 2-1 lead. JAF’s lost in the semifinal over to Pera was a shock to most of the spectators as JAF has been dominating the Inter University Football over the years. But with the victory in the final, Pera proved it wasn’t a mere luck but a hard fought victory.

Mora, the second runner up in the last year’s Inter University games had an early walk away from the tournament in the quarterfinals. All matches were played at the Eastern University grounds.

Astounding performance by University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJP) earns them the precious ‘Mora Cup 2012’ over the University ofMoratuwa (UOM). At the full-time whistle scoreboard registered a 3-0 victory in favor of USJP. Their aggressive play left the hosts with no answer.

Mora Cup was organized for the 8th consecutive time by the soccer team of UOM, held yesterday, 5th June at UOM grounds. This year’s tournament was powered by RedBull©. The event saw the participation of Eastern University (EST), USJP, UOM, University ofPeradeniya (UOP) and Wayamba University (WYB).

It was a dominating play by USJP being unbeaten throughout. During the finals they were leading 1-0 at the half-time and with a penalty early in the second half, they registered an unassailable 3-0 victory. This year’s final was a repeat of last year’s with the exact opposite result.

USJP striker T.M.H.P Gunesekara secured the Golden Boot for scoring 6 goals in just 4 matches including 2 in the finals. His fellow goalkeeper J.K.U Rachitha grabbed the Golden Gloves for saving 2 valuable penalties at the semis which took their dominance alive to the finals.

The tournament kick-started with defending champions, UOM and runners-up, USJP heading-on each other. The game went for USJP and they went on to beat WYB to top group A in the league round. UOM A beat WYB to be the 2nd of group A. UOP had the better off in group B beating UOM B and EST. UOM B was eliminated from the tournament by EST.

During the first semifinal, neither EST nor USJP secured a goal. The game was decided on a penalties shootout which went for USJP 1-3. UOM A beat UOP 1-0 in the second semi, which proved to be a nail-biter.

The tournament set a good platform to the upcoming Inter-University Soccer Championship. All those football-lovers out there, it’s time to pull the socks up for some serious ball play.

We at MoraSpirit congratulate the winners of Mora Cup 2012, University of Sri Jayewardenepura and wish all the very best for the rest of the teams at Inter-Uni.

University of Moratuwa lost to Kothalawala Defence University-B in the group stage.

There was no proper communication among the players in the first match but we came through to the rest, with confidence,” Captain Ashen Chanaka said.

UOM defeated KDU-A at semi-finals 1-0. The final was a heated match between UOM and KDU (B). The winning goal was played by M. Afrih in the tenth minute into the second half and soon after, captain Ashen Chanaka was given a red card, for arguing with the referee and had to leave the field.

There were several arguments between the players and the referee. The arguments started with a controversial decision given by the referee, ruling out a goal scored by UOM as a hand goal.

I’m really happy about the performance. The boys played really well at the finals when considering this being the first match after some time

It was good to play against Kothalawala Defence University in consideration the history we have

The third place match was played between KDU-A and ICBT. Kothalawala Defence University-A won third place 1-0.
