“Mora SMASHES 2012”, the Inaugural Table Tennis Championship organized by the University of Moratuwa (UOM) Table Tennis squad in collaboration with the Department of Physical Education of UOM, was successfully held on 8th and 9th of December at UOM premises with the participation of three Universities and four Higher Educational Institutes. It was a remarkable event for UOM in positioning himself as a benchmark for all the other Universities and Higher Educational Institutes.

Men’s Events

UOM boys performed splendidly throughout the tournament winning the championship with ease. Samuditha Ishan retained his title as the best sports personality in the event; crowning himself with four Golds for each event he took part. His Singles Event finals against Dulan Nakandala was an eye catching confrontation with both of them playing the best table tennis many have witnessed in the inter University arena. Dulan turned the advantage to his side after winning the first two sets but Samuditha came back strongly to win the next two sets dragging the match to the decider.  Meanwhile Sachith Kodagoda from University of Kelaniya (UOK) was awarded the Bronze.  In Men’s Doubles event Samuditha and Dulan was able to clasp the Championship by thrashing Chamitha Nanayakkara and Sachith Kodagoda from University of Kelaniya (KEL) in straight sets.

UOM “A” and KEL teams convincingly defeated their respective opponents and came through to the finals. UOM attackers gripped the trophy with a straight game (3/0), meanwhile UOM “B” team was awarded with Bronze beating the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) “B” team.

Women’s Events

UOM girls also put forth their best performance in the history. In singles event Treshani Perera defeated Binuri Ariyarathne (3/1) while Thiloma Madhushani from Wayamba University (WAY) won the Bronze. In Women’s doubles event Treshani and Binuri won the Gold by beating their opponents Waruni Nisansala and Lakmali Wijeweera from KEL. Chathuri Gunarathna and Nuwani Senanayake from UOM won the Bronze by beating Dilini Perera and Nishel Wimalasuriya from IIT.

However, Women’s team event resulted in some dispute among the competitors. After the league phase each team ended up winning one of their two matches. Rules and Regulations of SMASHES’12 were announced prior to the tournament, to play the final by ranking the scores obtained by each of team. Even though WAY obtained the highest score, they had to give away a walk-over to KEL, because of their best player had to leave early. Therefore KEL won the title of Women’s team Championship.
