MORA shined at the 9th Korea Cup Taekwondo Championship

The 9th Korea Cup Championship was held on 13th and 18th November, 2012 at the New Stadium at the Race Course ground and at the indoor sports complex of St. Joseph’s College. The tournament was organized by the Korea International Cooperation Agency and Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation and sponsored by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea. The tournament integrated three categories namely, Inter-School, Inter-University and Open Championship.

University of Moratuwa emerged champions in the Inter-University men’s category after showcasing immense skills where University of Colombo and University of Ruhuna became runners up. University of Kelaniya emerged as the Women’s championship with displaying outshined talents throughout the game while University of Moratuwa became the runner up. University of Kelaniya clinched the overall championship out performing their opponents and showcasing tremendous consistency in both women’s and men’s categories.

The performances and the competitiveness of every university throughout the tournament were highly appreciated. Performances in the men’s kyorugi (fighting), women’s kyorugi (fighting), men’s individual poomsae and women’s individual poomsae by the participants representing University of Moratuwa were remarkable. Wijaya Ekanayaka took part in the individual poomsae event in the National Championship and emerged as the silver medalist and was also awarded the best player of the tournament award. The team consisting Wenuka Chathuranga, Wijaya Ekanayaka, Asanga Sundarapperuma and Mahesh Wickramasinghe clinched the championship in the team poomsae event in the National level which is an outstanding achievement.

The Inter-University Taekwondo Championship 2012 which uncovered a number of skillful players, was held successfully on the 22nd of July at the New Gymnasium of University of Moratuwa (UOM).

The sportsmen from UOM displayed exquisite combat techniques that were a perfect combination of self-defence, sport and exercise, as they battled their way to the Men’s Championship. University of Colombo after a heated and exciting game became the runners-up in the same category. The third place was won by University of Ruhuna.

RUH sportswomen who played with noticeable enthusiasm and energy walked away with the Women’s Championship proving their skills in martial arts.  UOM & University of Kelaniya emerged the first and second runners-up respectively in the same category.

UOM Taekwondo team winning 6 Gold medals, 7 Silver medals and 3 Bronze medals walked away as Inter-university Taekwondo Champions 2012, while RUH ended up as the first runners-up and UOC as the second runners-up.

The captain of the Champions, Mr. Wenuka Chathuranga from UOM on behalf of the entire team, extended his heartfelt gratitude to their Taekwondo Coach Master Eunchong Jeon, Mr. Sanjeewa Jayasinghe and everyone who helped them in numerous ways. He further mentioned that UOM women’s Taekwondo team exhibited their best performance in this year’s tournament & that they contributed to the success immensely. Wenuka also expressed his pride & happiness in being the caption of first Taekwondo team to bring a championship to UOM.

While congratulating the overall and Men’s champions - UOM and Women’s champions RUH, on their achievement, we hope these budding sportsmen and women would take Sri Lanka to greater heights in Taekwondo!

UOM Enters National Taekwondo Medals List at Korea Cup 2011

University of Moratuwa (UOM) emerged champions at the Creative Poomse Competition of the Korea Cup 2011. ‘Poosme’ or ‘pattern’ is a display of taekwondo techniques, and the four member team topped number of island-wide clubs and university teams.

Korea Cup 2011 is an open taekwondo championship organized by the government of Republic of Korea. It was held for the 8th consecutive year on 1st and 2nd of October, 2011 and university teams marked their first appearance this year.

We are very happy to win the Creative Poomse event,” said Sumedha Sandagiri, the former vice-captain of UOM taekwondo, “and very proud since it is the very first time such an event (Poomse) is introduced to Sri Lankan arena.” As he sees, the master for UOM team, Mr. Eunchong Geon is behind all this success. Mr. Geon himself is a veteran at Poomse variation of the game and took over coaching UOM team recently.

In the inter-university category, University of Kelaniya (KEL) was the overall champions. UOM managed to hold on to the second place while University of Ruhuna (RUH) clinched the third place.

K.H.B.M Randunu of UOM won the special award for Best University Player: male and W.A.A Jeewanthi of USJP, the Best University Player: female award. In the inter-university Poomse event, UOM managed to secure championships of the ‘Black Belt’ and ‘Under Blue Belt’ categories.

Sumedha said, “Some of our players who participated at the WUGs (World University Games) didn’t compete at the inter-university category, because they were seeking an entry to the national squad by competing at the open category. ”

According to the former vice-captain, the team from UOM for Korea Cup 2011 consisted of several new players, and it was a good experience and a match practice for them. He further added, “But our girls’ team’s performance was not very satisfactory. ”

Colombo and Kelaniya secured the taekwondo Gold medals

University of Colombo emerged as chamaltpions in recently concluded Inter University Taekwondo Men’s championship held at University of Kelaniya. University of Colombo gained the first place of Heavy (above 87Kg) and Light (68-74Kg) categories while securing 2nd place in Fin (below 53Kg),  Middle (80-87Kg) and Welter (74-80Kg) categories to claim the top notch of the points table with total of 22 points. Meanwhile University of Moratuwa became the first runners up in overall men’s championship by producing champions in Fin (below 53Kg), Fly (54-58Kg) and Feather 63-68Kg) categories, and 1st runners up in Light (68-74Kg) category, which gained them 18 points in final points table.  University of Kelaniya came up as 2nd runners up by becoming champions in Welter (74-80Kg) category, and becoming first runners up in Fly (54-58Kg), Feather (63-68Kg) which earned them 14 points in final points table.

It’s important to mention here that the three champions of Fin, Fly and Feather categories, K H B M Randunu, E M W D Ekanayaka, and T A G Thangalle of University of Moratuwa and the champion of the heavy(above 87kg) category Nuwan Nayanajith from University of Colombo had been selected to represent srilanka in upcoming World university Taekwondo championship based upon their performance in the season. Spectators could witness some national level performances by some players as well as very tightly contests matches during the tournament. The finals between R Ranaweera of University of Peradeniya and his opponent in which he disparaged his opponent by some outstanding performance accompanied by some very good kicks, and the semifinal match in Feather category in which T A G Thangalle clearly outshined his opponent as 0-12, can be considered as par national level matches in the Tournament. The finals of Fin category, between K H B M Randunu of University of Moratuwa, and M H D Hasantha of University of Colombo was very tightly contested match in which KHBM Randunu was able to secure men’s championship for University of Moratuwa by one point.

Meanwhile University of Kelaniya was able to secure the women’s championship of inter university taekwondo  tournament while University of Peradeniya and university of Moratuwa came up as 1st and 2nd runners-up respectively. Performance of TL Kuttapitiya from university of Visual and Performing arts was highlighted in the women’s tournament. She, who also holed national gold medal, thoroughly defeated her opponent in first match with some elegant shots and later secured the Gold medal in Light (57-62Kg) category after another graceful and spectacular show in final match. In the meantime, University of Moratuwa was able to win their first women’s taekwondo Gold medal in this tournament which was won by UoM women’s captain R K Gamage who contested in Fin category. Later K H A Madhushani who contested in Middle category also was able to win another Gold medal for UoM.
