INFINI 2012 sports fest organized by the People’s Education Society Institute of technology (PESIT) was held in Banglore, India at PESIT premises. The badminton tournament was held from 20th to 21st March with the participation of over 15 Universities including University of Moratuwa as the foreign delegate for the event.

University of Moratuwa men’s team won against two local Universities from the Karnataka state by winning two matches out of three and got through to the Semifinals. The two Universities beaten by UoM were KITS and PESIT at pre-quarter and quarter finals respectively.

Semifinals’ was a tough match which was decided on best of five. The semifinals were played against RVCE University and UoM won after playing all five matches and by winning one single and two doubles played by Nadika, Nadika & Akila, and Thaidha & Chamath respectively. All the matches were closely fought and the last double went for a three set making it more intense.

The second semifinal was played between Siddaganga Institute of Technology (SIT) and University of Karnataka. SIT came through to the finals by winning one single, due to Karnataka University had only two players to play the match.

SIT claimed to be victorious at the Finals with the win of three singles. University of Moratuwa won the double and maintained to be undefeated in doubles throughout the tournament with Nadika pairing with Tharidha in the first match and with Akila in rest of the matches.

University of Moratuwa women’s team lost at the first round due to Akilã getting a knee injury during her match.

The two Indian teams confirmed from the universities in state of Rajasthan, India cancelled their delegation few days prior to the event due to unavoidable circumstances. Unfortunately the invitational inter university championship was held without the participation of an international team.

This year due to the increased number of 300 school entries, the tournament was held at St. Thomas’ college and the university new gymnasium. School players took part in singles and doubles event, under five age categories of U11, U13, U15, U17 & U19. The finals were held on 7th March amidst the loud cheers from parents, player and badminton lovers. U19 and U17 winners were awarded with scholarships and other age category winners were rewarded at the award ceremony.

The inter university men’s championship was fought under four groups and the women’s under two groups. Under the men’s championship University of Moratuwa (UOM) against University of Sri Jayawardanapura (USJP) and University of Keleniya (KEL) against Sri Lanka Institute of Information and Technology competed with each other at semifinals.

The semifinals between UOM and USJP was a closely fought match and UOM went through to the finals by winning the last double with a score of 23/21, in the third set and claiming the victory for three matches out of five. Women’s semifinals were played by KEL against UOM and SLIIT against Achievers(ACH). UOK and SLIIT got selected to the finals with a solid win over UOM and ACH.

Sri Lanka Institute of Information and technology became the champions in both men’s and women’s category. Men’s team became the champions by winning two singles and a double against UOM while the women’s team became champs by winning two singles and a double. The consolation finals were played and USJP became third in the men’s category and UOM in the women’s category.

The award and the closing ceremony of “University of Moratuwa International Shuttlers’ Fest 2012” was held at the Civil Engineering auditorium with Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. A R Attalage gracing the occasion as chief guest and Prof. S Samarawickrama, Chairman of Sports advisory Board as the guest of honor for the evening. Western province novice’s badminton tournament was held from 20th to 21st of August with the participation of many young and old talented players representing schools, universities, education institutes and private companies. The tournament was organized by the western province badminton association to promote badminton among players who are yet to win a national title.
On 20th Saturday the tournament took place at YMCA courts, Moratuwa and it was held under different age categories as singles and doubles, which were under 14, under 19, over 20 and over 40.
After an exciting series of matches Madhaw Wijeratne, Akila Silva and Chamath Gunasekara qualified to the quarterfinals stage, which was held on the following day at University of Moratuwa courts. Quarter finals and semifinals were played in the morning session and players were thriving hard to reach finals by defeating their opponent.
Two University of Moratuwa players Akila Silva and Madhawa Wijeratne played hard, and both of their matches went for a third set, making spectators hearts skip a beat, and qualified for the finals in the over 20 age category by defeating two talented players in semifinals.  After a closely fought match Akila Silva managed to win over Madhawa Wijeratne by defeating him by two sets to nil (21-18, 21-16) and became the champion in the over 20 category.
