Mora emerges victorious at the Mora Soccer ’11, beating J’pura

Universtiy of Moratuwa teaaltm A, beat University of Jayawardenapura to secure the championship at Mora Soccer Tournament, 2011. The home team claimed 2-0 victory over the visitors at the finals.

The tournament was held in Mora Grounds, during the 1st and 2nd of June, 2011. This was organized by the Football Team of University of Moratuwa, with the participation of four other universities, namely, Peradeniya, Colombo, Wayamba and J’pura.
Day 1 (June 1st) marked the group stage matches of the tournament. Mora A topped group A, beating J’pura (1-0) and Wayamba (3-0), while J’pura emerged second with a colossal win over Wayamba (7-0). Colombo was ahead in group B, beating Mora B (4-0) and Pera (1-0), while Pera remained at the second place beating Mora B (2-0) . Group A match between Mora and J’pura was a cracker, and one would have expected these two teams to meet in finals.
First semifinal took place between Mora A versus Pera and Mora A managed to secure their place in the final with a 3-1 victory. J’pura clinched nail-biting victory of 1-0 over Colombo during the second semifinals, to meet the home team in the final. This meant that Colombo played against Pera in the consolation match, which ended up giving an upper hand to Colombo with a 1-0 win, placing them as the third of the overall tournament.

Day 2 (June 2nd) afternoon:  The final was an equally poised encounter between the two teams and the expectations were very high for a nail biting finish to the tournament. Mora A had the home ground advantage and backing from the crowd. During the final, J’pura played to their strengths using the skillful strikers. But Mora defended their territory well and managed to hang on to possession of the ball. This gained them their first goal, scored by Ashen. The game was a cracker up to the point where Mora was awarded a free kick just outside the penalty box over a foul by J’pura mid-fielder. Ramzee converted the free-kick to an extraordinary goal, giving a stable platform for a home-side victory.  By the time the final whistle blew, Mora A has had secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory over the visitors. R.Ramzee of Mora A was awarded the best player for the fabulous performance and his teammate, D. Sendanayake was awarded the best goalkeeper of the tournament.
That marked the end of two days of extreme competition and sportsmanship between the island’s most renowned university soccer teams. This would have given them a good warm-up for the upcoming inter-university soccer tournament.

Mora Soccer Tournament organized by Football team of University of Moratuwa will be held on 1st and 2nd June 2011 at Mora grounds. This will be an invitational tournament with the participation of 5 unis namely Peradeniya, Colombo,Wayamba, J'pura and Mora as the hosting team. Captain Renukshan Saputhanthri says that he need to thank Old Mora players for the support given to his team for continuing the tournament in this year. This will be a good warm up for all participation teams before the upcoming inter university games
