SIEG 2012 Invitational Inter University Table Tennis Championship was held on 31-03-2012 and 01-04-2012 at the University of Kelaniya for the second consecutive year.

It is remarkable to both the UOM boys and girls who have shown their Excellency in this tournament. Samuditha Ishan, one of leading players in the UOM Table Tennis squad, became as the best sport personality in SIEG 2012. He was awarded in Golds in each and every event he took part in. They are Men’s single, Men’s Doubles with N.S.K Wickramanayake, Men’s Team Event and the Mixed Doubles event with Binuri Ariyarathne.

It must be mentioned that three out of four players selected for Semi Finals are from UOM in the men’s category. They are Samuditha Ishan, Dulan Nakandala and N.S.K Wickramanayake who was the 1st Runners up in the singles event. As a result of this Men’s Finals was in between two players from UOM. UOM defeated Kothalawala Defense University (KDU) in Men’s Doubles finals and defeated UOK in both the Team event and the mixed event.

In the Girls events Binuri Ariyarathne and Treshani Perera became as Champions in the women’s doubles event by defeating the UOS after a very tight match. In the single event, both the leading players in UOM were defeated by Ruhansi Wijekoon from UOS, who has the most outstanding experience on the table but, Binuri and Treshani could hold the Silver and Bronze awards in the single event respectively. In the girls team event UOM was beaten by UOK at the finals, even though Binuri and Treshani was succeed in their singles but they could not hold the trophy due to losing of second single and two doubles. It must be stated that due to high competition at the last reverse double played by Treshani and Chathuri, have lost by a single score(9/11 in the last set and end up with 3/2 sets score).

At the end of SIEG 2012, it has been sealed that UOM TT team will bring golds to his alma mater in the forthcoming Inter University Games. MoraSpirit extends its sincere wishes to the winners and all the teams that took part.

The INFINI 2012, International Sports Fest, was a remarkable event to the UOM Table Tennis squad. This was held in Bangalore, India at People’s Education Society Institute of technology (PESIT) premises with the participants from Universities all over the country and UOM was the foreign participation at this sports fest.

Samuditha Ishan, Laleendra Dharamasiri, Binuri Ariyarathne , Treshani Perera and Chathuri Gunarathna represented the UOM squad in the event. Since only 2 members in the boys team could join to the tour, it arose with a difficulty in handling the situation where it requires minimum of 3 players per team. Any how it resulted in a favorable way to the UOM boys, without giving a walkover to the other party.

For the very first time in the History, UOM Table Tennis girls could hold the Champion trophy. In the way to the finals, girls faced many challenges due to the different playing styles of Indian girls. UOM had to play with Amritha Institute of Engineering and Acharya Institute in their Quarter Finals and Semi Finals respectively. In the Finals with the People’s Education Society Institute of technology, the game was influenced by many parties and there was a strict adherence to the International rules, and some were resulted in arguments and finally two umpires were required from both the Universities. The best player of the PESIT team was defeated by Treshani Perera. There was always a backup from Binuri Ariyarathne and Chathuri Gunarathna at the finals to lead to the Championship trophy.

UOM boys lost to C.M.R Institute of Technology at the Semi Finals. It must be emphasized that Samuditha Ishan was remained undefeated in his singles by neither a player during the entire tournament. It was very competitive until the last moment, but Laleendra Dharmasiri was crushed after a very tight game.

These achievements empowered to the UOM TT in the forthcoming Inter University Games. MoraSpirit extends its sincere wishes to the winners and all the teams that took part.

The table tennis team of University of Moratuwa is a dedicated group of youngsters with a single dream. A dream to bring every glory to their alma mater.

The result of this dedication has increased with the years. In 2010, both men’s and women’s teams were awarded the bronze at the Open Sports meet organized by Birla Institute of Technology and Science in Pilani, India. It was a memorable moment when the best player award of the tournament was won by Samuditha Ishan, one of the most leading players in the UOM TT team. Mora men’s team won the silver at the 10th Sri Lankan University Games 2010, and again in 2011, while the UOM women’s team remained in the fourth place.

Players of both teams performed outstandingly at the team events and also at the individual events at the inter university tournament, organized by the University of Kelaniya. The men’s team clinched the championship. They were awarded the gold at the team event and the men’s double event, and the bronze at the individual event. It was a remarkable event for the women’s team as well; they won the silver award at the team event, silver award at the individual event, and bronze for the double event.

The TT team of UOM consists of some significant players such as Kanchana Athapattu, Pathmasiri Ambegoda, N.S.K. Wickramanayake and Samuditha Ishan. They were selected to participate the World University Games as well as in the Asian University Table Tennis Championship since 2009. With the addition of passionate TT players, such as Dulan Nakandala to the university squad the future of UOM looks quite bright.

Finally it is the expectation of both team captains, namely Suneth Mendis, Binuri Ariyarathne, Samuditha Ishan and Treshani Perera, “To strive as one team and to win as one team and bring home 16 gold medals.”
